Meet Miss Christa

The story behind The SWIM Method™ — a lifetime in the water, and a lifetime learning how to teach the individual child.

Miss Christa, founder of Sierra Swim Academy

Miss Christa began swimming and training at a young age in Southern California. She grew up around water, became a competitive swimmer, and began teaching swimming professionally around age 18.

Early in her career she worked and trained at Daland Swim School under Peter Daland, the legendary longtime USC swimming coach and one of the most recognized figures in American competitive swimming.

She continued developing as an instructor, took on coaching and instructor-training responsibilities early in her career, taught in Beverly Hills, and accumulated decades of experience working directly with children.

Her greatest realization was that knowing how to swim and knowing how to teach the individual child are two very different skills. Years of observing how fear, confidence, trust, temperament, behavior, and learning style affect swimming progress helped lead to The SWIM Method™.

Miss Christa believes a fearful child shouldn’t automatically be taught exactly like a fearless child. Some swimmers need reassurance, some need play or repetition, and others need to be appropriately challenged. Respect the emotion without allowing fear to permanently define what a child believes they can accomplish.
